We’d like to introduce you to Josée. She’s a mama of three, taking on Baldy with her husband Jeremie for the first time, and will be popping her head in each month to blog about it.
When we heard Baldy was under new ownership and reopening for the season, the excitement drew us in. Many of our friends kept sharing how amazing it was up there and how their kids had come to love the mountain.
For the last eight years, cross-country skiing was our family sport of choice. Were we going to leave this behind for a whole new adventure? You bet!
Before our Nordic skiing days, my husband and I rode snowboards. Naturally, we debated: do we ski or snowboard? We figured skiing would be an easier transition for our kids, so we committed all the way – right down to the ski socks.
We picked up our passes during The Festival of Colours, which was when my kids discovered they wouldn’t have to ski up hill before going down again. We had passed the point of no return.
We showed up on the Sunday of Baldy’s opening weekend to a packed parking lot. Getting from our car to the Magic Carpet was the difficult part of our day. There were big boots, heavy skis, itchy tags (I swear I had cut out all the tags!) and tears. Good thing I had some chocolate stashed in my pocket… for my kids, of course.
The Magic Carpet turned out to be the perfect place to get comfortable on our new ski legs; we returned again and again throughout our first days. It’s also an ideal spot to meet other families and for kids to make new friends. After two days, even our youngest had shed his ski harness and was able to go up and down on his own (gold star!)
When we braved the ski lifts with our three kids, the lifties slowed things down to help the wee ones get on. But getting off the lift was a bit more challenging. I’m still figuring that part out. We’d often end up in one big heap, no matter what we tried. I was a bit embarrassed at first, but it just kept on happening. So I’ve accepted it as our norm, for now.
All in all, my family is taking to Baldy, and I’m impressed by how quickly my kids are gaining confidence on their skis. They’re keen for Snow School to start up in January; I think I’ll need some lessons too so that I can keep up with them 😉
Hello, my name is Josée. I’m an outdoor enthusiast, photographer and mother to three young, energetic children. We hail from the northern interior of British Columbia, but these days call the sunny South Okanagan home. You can find us hiking, biking, paddling, skiing and exploring our way in and around the beautiful Okanagan Valley. I share our family adventures on my blog Backwoods Mama.
